The Dorothy S. Farnet Sewing Center

This is what happens when the love and respect of family meets the desire to make a sustainable difference! Dorothy’s family became aware of the life changing work of Hope Renewed International and started to get involved. The struggles of those living in the Red Zone of La Limonada reminded them of their own family struggles during the Great Depression. Knowing how Dorothy’s perseverance through grief, hardship and challenge forever changed their own lives, gave them the desire to extend that gift to Guatemala.

In 2017, Guatemala’s Environmental Ministry found that 95% of surface water sources in the country were polluted and unsafe for swimming, washing or drinking. Due to lack of regulations and policies—including water pollution laws and resource management—limited access to potable water affects the country’s most vulnerable populations, people living in Guatemala’s rural communities.

The state of the COVID-19 pandemic in La Limonada

Covid-19 is far from over in Guatemala - in La Limonada the challenges from the pandemic are magnified by the poverty, poor employment and lack of clean water. Hope Renewed International is moving ever closer to opening HOPE CENTER in La Limonada! Hope Center will house the DSF Sewing Center which will provide training for women who wish to work in the textile industry and the Water Filtration Store, where clean water will be more accessible to the 60,000 residents of La Limonada.

The Importance of the Textile Industry in Guatemala

While Guatemala is a country struggling severely with poverty, the textile industry is one of the bright spots that give Guatemalans the opportunity to earn a living. Because of this, we at Hope Renewed International (HRI) are excited to announce that we are fully funded to move forward with our Dorothy S. Farnet Centro de Costura (DSF Sewing Center) which will offer training, education, and production of retail apparel and home goods to women to help them gain valuable skills needed to find work in the textile industry.
