Learning More About Religion in Guatemala

Hope Renewed and Faith in Christ Within Guatemala

Working within Guatemala and interacting with its people, we take part in their rich culture and history. Like many nations in Central America, Guatemala is shaped both by indigenous folk traditions as well as modern developments brought by colonization and the changing social and economic trends of the current day. In particular, these developments shape Guatemala’s religious culture, in which Hope Renewed actively participates.

Guatemala remains a very religious nation, with the majority of people practicing Christianity. The roots of Guatemalan religious culture begin with Mayan and other indigenous traditions. Many of these traditions survived colonization and were integrated into the various Catholic practices brought by the Spanish colonizers. As such, more than 40% of Guatemalans identify as Catholic.

Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy are increasingly popular in Guatemalan culture and have been on the rise since the 20th century. In Guatemala, freedom of religion is constitutionally protected, which allows organizations like ours to serve Guatemalans and share our faith freely. We use our faith and love of Jesus Christ as the foundation to serve people and help alleviate the poverty that plagues Guatemala.

At Hope Renewed, we serve people by providing basic needs in times of crisis, operating a preschool in an area of extreme poverty, creating work centers, and supporting a scholarship program. This diversity of programs allow us to spread our faith-based mission far and wide while tackling the problems of poverty where they persist. By modeling our work after the life and ministry of Christ, we hope to aid those in need and set an example of what a faithful life of service looks like.

Hope Renewed needs people like you to make our mission possible. There are plenty of ways to support our programs and get involved. Take action today!
