Why Guatemala - by Rob Douglas (Board Vice President)
Why Guatemala?
As one of the poorest nations in the world this land of breathtaking natural beauty is also filled with some of the most beautiful, kind, compassionate, humble people you’ll ever meet. But their history is so full of conflict, war, and unimaginable poverty. Statistically speaking this can be researched and verified. We serve there simply because the need is so great and Jesus specifically called us to such places to love and serve such people.
Why HRI?
Hope Renewed International is a ministry focused on tangible ways to empower, educate, equip, and elevate any and all Guatemalans we meet, love, serve, and even hire. Our mission is a combination of the great command and the great commission, sharing Jesus first and foremost as the only answer to our human condition, especially in a country so depleted of material resources yet filled to the brim in many cases with spiritual wealth. It is this curious and unexpected paradox that we want to share with Americans who choose to participate in our mission and hopefully grow in faith as well.
Why the Dump, the Ghetto, and Orphans?
La Limonada , where we serve is the largest urban slum in Central America - It is just one mile away from the presidential palace in Guatemala City
At Jesus command we truly love and serve “the least of these” in the poorest areas of one of the poorest places on earth. Renewing Hope is not just the name of the organization but rather an ongoing action that gives legs, hands, and feet to our core beliefs and corporate statement of faith. Those left behind by society and government are those we are called to lift up in real tangible ways with discipleship, education, employment, and prayer.
