Why Guatemala - by Megan Twadell (Board Secretary & Mission Coordinator)
Why do you support HRI?
I support HRI because I believe it is doing the crucial work of coming alongside impoverished Guatemalans to be the hands and feet of Christ. However, unlike many other international organizations, HRI seeks to empower the people of Guatemala to capitalize on their individual talents and gifts to be the catalysts for change within their own communities. HRI is truly seeking to end the cycle of poverty in this nation.
We are so grateful for our staff team (and their families) in Guatemala!
Our staff are working hard to be the Godly example of change we want for each person we serve.
Isn't there plenty of need in our own country?
Yes, it is so important to love our neighbors and those in our own communities, and I believe pouring into the lives of another culture and people group allows new perspectives and understandings of the needs in our own neighborhoods. I remember my own "aha" moment when visiting Guatemala for the first time and hearing about the injustices and issues plaguing families there. At one point, it dawned on me that many of these problems were not so different than the ones faced by certain populations in my own city and county. It allowed me to grow a new heart for serving back in the States.
The need is so great - do you really feel any amount of money/support sent to Guatemala can make a difference?
I truly believe every dollar makes a difference in Guatemala. Every donation is an encouragement to HRI, its employees, and its students that there are others in the world who see us and care. I also believe that--just like the loaves and fish--the Lord can take little and work miracles to feed the thousands. We only have to commit our organization and its funds to Him to do a mighty work!
